🧬 Experimental cross

Determine the mode of inheritance of four Drosophila mutations

Infer the inheritance of sepia, yellow, white and miniature using only the observed phenotypes and counts in the F₁ and F₂ generations.

♀ Female parent
Female parent
Genotype: Unknown
Observed phenotype
  • Yellow body
  • White eyes
  • Miniature wings
  • Wild type at sepia
× P cross
♂ Male parent
Male parent
Genotype: Unknown
Observed phenotype
  • Sepia eyes
  • Wild-type body colour
  • Wild type at white
  • Wild-type wings
Scientific question

Based only on the F₁ and F₂ offspring, determine the inheritance pattern of each mutation, identify dominance or recessiveness, test for sex linkage, detect epistasis and linkage, and reconstruct the parental genotypes.

Use the flies that emerge as your evidence. The parental genotypes are intentionally hidden.

Vial Shelf

Name a vial before starting it, then switch between saved generations at any time.

The simulation uses the original start timestamp plus the selected speed multiplier. Closing the browser does not stop development.

Virtual Lab Notebook

Automatic stage observations and student notes are preserved locally and in the cloud.

No observations yet.

F₁ Offspring Observations

Use the observed phenotype classes and counts to infer the inheritance pattern.
